I’ve been thinking a lot about adventures. When I posted my intentions about my word, I also asked for some suggestions, your answers were:

  • marriage
  • Ha ha tonka
  • color shine run
  • hot air balloon festival
  • rock climbing
  • hang gliding
  • parachute jump
  • learn how to ride a motorcycle
  • photographing Ankor Wat in Cambodia
  • visit Thailand
  • take sailing lessons
  • go on a safari
  • drive on a high performance race course
  • rim to rim walk at the Grand Canyon
  • scuba dive
  • piercing
  • tattoo

Unless someone is going to start endorsing my adventures, I think I might have to wait on most of these! After I reading these though, I wanted to come up with a definition of adventure that speaks to me; one that says, you don’t have to travel or spend any money to do this. So I searched for the right words. And one day, I found this by Microadventurer Alastair Humphreys:

You do not need to fly to the other side of the planet to do an expedition.
You do not need to be an elite athlete, expertly trained, or rich to have an adventure.

Adventure is only a state of mind.
Adventure is stretching yourself; mentally, physically or culturally. It is about doing what you do not normally do, pushing yourself hard and doing it to the best of your ability.

And if that is true then adventure is all around us, at all times. Even during hard financial times such as these. Times, I believe, when getting out into the wild are more enjoyable, invigorating and important than ever.

Yep. This exactly. So this is Capen Point.

Let me just say, that this walk is hardly a strenuous work out, cost nothing and could take any range of time that I allowed. Yet, adventure it is. There are a ton of trails and parks near us, so I thought that these could be part of my adventure – something free, easy, and as time consuming as I want them to be.

I went here last week. It was about 45 degrees and sunny as can be. I loved it. And now I’m hating it since it’s 30 degrees and there’s still some snow in the forecast. I spent a while here just relaxing and soaking up the sun.

I’m excited to see where my mini-adventures take me in the future – stay tuned!!
